UNDER THE LAKE — Interview Archive

The interview was confirmed, then canceled. It is preserved accurately and is not presented as completed.

Guest: Juan Carlos Mostaza
Project: UNDER THE LAKE
Archive status: Confirmed, then canceled — not completed

ARCHIVE NOTE: The interview was confirmed and later canceled. LEDGERA is deliberately preserving that status. There is no fake Q&A below; instead, this page functions as the film brief our editors had prepared before the conversation was called off.

UNDER THE LAKE is a fourteen-minute Spanish animated thriller directed by Juan Carlos Mostaza. It takes place in a world of wire-like, faceless figures and begins with a father and son living near a seemingly beautiful lake. When the son rescues a badly injured stranger who reaches the shore, the calm geometry of that world becomes a setup for danger.

The film contains no dialogue, which makes visual design and sound carry the burden normally assigned to exposition. Faceless characters are an especially interesting choice for a thriller: without conventional expressions, the audience has to read posture, distance, rhythm, framing, and movement. Fear becomes architectural.

THE INTERVIEW WE DID NOT GET TO HAVE

Our planned discussion with Mostaza would have focused on why he chose wire bodies rather than naturalistic animation, how he builds empathy for characters without faces or spoken language, and how the lake functions as both a beautiful image and a threat. We also wanted to discuss the compression required by short-form animation. Fourteen minutes leaves little space for explanation, so every visual rule has to be legible almost immediately.

The project was selected for Tribeca's animated shorts program, where work of radically different visual styles shares the same theatrical context. That environment made UNDER THE LAKE a useful subject for LEDGERA's film desk because it demonstrates how independent animation can create a complete genre world without the scale of a feature production.

WHY A CANCELED INTERVIEW STILL HAS A PAGE

Coverage archives are more credible when they show their limits. The original placeholder told readers almost nothing; deleting it would erase a genuine part of the reporting trail. This expanded dossier gives the page editorial value while keeping the central fact intact: the interview did not happen.

If a future conversation is scheduled, this URL can be updated with the actual interview. Until then, UNDER THE LAKE remains a project brief and a transparent record of LEDGERA's Tribeca 2026 press work.

WHAT PREPARATION REVEALS, EVEN WITHOUT THE INTERVIEW

A canceled conversation still leaves behind a useful editorial trail: the film was watched or researched, its formal choices were identified, and questions were developed around the work rather than around generic publicity. In this case, the preparation points toward the craft problem at the center of UNDER THE LAKE — how to create tension, empathy, and narrative clarity when faces and dialogue are removed from the filmmaker's toolkit.

That is not a substitute for Mostaza's own explanation. It is a record of what LEDGERA saw as worth asking. The distinction matters. A publication should never fill an absent interview with invented intention, but it can show readers the critical framework that made the project interesting enough to pursue in the first place.

TRANSPARENCY IS PART OF THE ARCHIVE

Festival coverage moves quickly and not every booking survives scheduling changes. Publishing that reality makes the archive stronger because it tells readers which pages contain completed reporting and which preserve preparation. It also prevents future editors from mistaking a calendar confirmation for a finished interview months after the original press cycle has ended.

If UNDER THE LAKE returns to the publication through a later conversation, review, or animation feature, this dossier gives that work a foundation. Until then, its value is precisely that it remains honest about the boundary between what LEDGERA intended to report and what was actually completed.
